Our founder, Dale Franchetto, was in the unfortunate position of finding herself unemployed during the course of the covid epidemic. Upon realizing, in November 2020, that the lockdown was not ending anytime soon, she decided a couple of months later, it was time to go back to school to become a much needed PSW (personal support worker). Most of the course was online, and by May 2021 she was completing a placement with the March of Dimes community outreach program for seniors and stroke survivors. She accepted a position with the company in September 2021, and is currently employed part-time with the organization.
Dale quickly discovered the many challenges that these seniors were facing, even prior to covid, and that these challenges were greatly magnified during and after the lockdown period.
The first challenge, which we call 'Phase One', is focused on getting affordable personal and household hygiene products to their doors without the high cost of having to have them delivered along with their medications from pharmacies. Many seniors have no families, or worse, families that don’t care enough about them to help. Another major hurdle the seniors face, is the number of items, the weight, the cost to purchase in bulk, the surcharge to purchase small quantities and getting these products from the store to their apartments. Just an example of how ridiculous the grocery industry can be: forty bottles of water go for around three dollars at Costco. Nestle goes for around three dollars for thirty-five bottles. Most grocery stores charge from three to four dollars for a twenty-four pack. By comparison, a six pack of water is almost five dollars. The same applies to so many different items. That is extremely pricey for most people over fifty. What we consider convenience, is a necessity for most of our seniors, both physically and financially.
Dale hopes to implement three phases to our services, but there are endless needs in the senior community. |
